Geography

Melbourn Primary School

At Melbourn Primary School, Geography is taught progressively from EYFS to Year 6, building both knowledge and skills in fieldwork, locational understanding and human and physical geography. Pupils begin by exploring their immediate environment using simple maps and directional language, gradually advancing to using compasses, grid references and digital tools for fieldwork. Locational knowledge expands from identifying the UK to comparing continents with a focus on physical and human features. Children learn to interpret maps and atlases, understand global geography concepts like time zones and climate zones and conduct comparative studies of countries. By Year 6, students demonstrate a deep understanding of geographical processes, including natural resources, economic activity and how physical geography influences human settlements.
