Music

Melbourn Primary School

At Melbourn, Music is a thread that binds the whole school together. Huge importance is placed on the development of each child as a singer and this sits as the foundation stone of our Music Curriculum. Children learn to pitch-match, feel pulse and rhythm in their bodies, before transferring these sounds and feelings to the symbols, notation and reading of music. Importance is placed on the depth of practical music and so children start learning the recorder in reception and continue it through to Year 6. Alongside this, pupils explore a diverse range of composers from different eras and genres within music. Melbourn is proud to have a choir made up of pupils from Years 2 – 6 which meets together to rehearse each week. A weekly singing assembly brings the whole school community together in song, and its aim is to: grow and inspire pupils as choral singers, develop their self-belief, and prepare the music for whole-school celebrations and assemblies.

Music lessons

We offer children the opportunity to learn a range of musical instruments at Melbourn Primary School, taught by peripatetic music teachers during the school day. These include piano, guitar, clarinet, flute, drums and singing. Please note that there is a waiting list for some instruments. Lessons normally commence at the beginning of the school year but there may be the possibility to start mid-year, depending on availability.
