Earlier this year I shared how developing art across the school is a current focus of our strategic plan. As part of our teachers’ professional development programme Mrs Connolly and Miss Bartlett have been leading the teachers in developing their art skills for specific areas of the curriculum. This week we concentrated on sculpture. The teachers learnt how to make a thumb pot, join clay effectively and how to use coils of clay to make a pot. As a result, children in year 3 have already been using the joining techniques to make a flower based on the work of Georgia O’Keefe.
It is wonderful to see quality art popping up all around the school. In the main lobby, we have a stunning display of Year 5/6 art work inspired by the work of William Morris. I stopped in my tracks when I saw it for the first time! The children drew repeated motifs onto canvases and then painted them with acrylic paint – please do admire them when you visit the office; they are absolutely wonderful.
